The architecture team designed this project for easy conversion between independent senior apartments, assisted living and nursing.  This will allow the Rubin Campus at Handmaker to change the mix of housing provided as market demand changes in the future.

Handmaker offers a mix of living environments for seniors, including 14 independent living apartments, 96 new assisted living units and 64 new skilled nursing beds. The project included 120,000 sq ft of new construction, in addition to the renovation of two existing buildings on the campus. Other on-site services include an adult day health program, memory care and hospice care. Fully sprinklered and built to hospital standards of fire protection, the project cost was $97 per sq ft.

A multidisciplinary team took part in the design phases, providing cost estimating, systems evaluation and recommendations for phasing of the construction, as well as information on all major building utilities and systems to remain in operation at each phase. Overall, the $11,700,000 project was separated into five major phases and multiple sub-phases. All new and renovated work was done with minimal disruptions to current operations, which allowed residents to remain on site throughout construction.

 In 2003, Handmaker’s Rubin Campus was chosen as the Best Midsize Continuing Care Retirement Center in the country by the National Association of Home Builders.
